We’re proud to share that Being Wear founder Andrew Whittle has been featured in Underlines Magazine’s The Friday Interview.
The interview explores the deeply personal story behind Being Wear, from Andrew’s daughter Mads struggling to find underwear that accommodated her sensory needs to the creation of a brand built around comfort, inclusion and personal freedom.
“Being Wear began with a feeling that something should exist, but didn’t,” Andrew explains. “Mads is autistic and has ADHD, and seams, tags and tight or scratchy fabrics can be unbearable for her. When she later asked for a chest binder instead of a bra, we struggled to find anything comfortable, age-appropriate and sensory-friendly.”
That experience inspired us to rethink how underwear is designed and sold.
Being Wear has no men’s or women’s sections. Instead, people can shop by what works for their body: tops or bottoms, pouch or no pouch, across an inclusive range of sizes. Our products are made using super-soft modal fabric and sensory-considerate details, including no irritating tags or harsh seams.
The interview also covers the realities of building a founder-funded start-up, the lessons we’ve learned along the way and the challenge of changing deeply ingrained underwear-buying habits.
As Andrew puts it:
“We’re competing with habit as much as we’re competing with other brands.”
However, the most rewarding part of the journey has been hearing directly from the people Being Wear was created to support. Parents have told us their children can finally wear underwear all day without discomfort. Adults have shared that they feel seen, understood and comfortable in their underwear for the first time.
In just 12 months, Being Wear has grown from an Australian start-up into an international brand selling across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Our recent UK launch, supported by neurodiversity advocate Christine McGuinness, is helping us introduce sensory-friendly, gender-free underwear to even more human beings.
And this is only the beginning. We’re developing new colours, styles and products while working towards our longer-term vision: building a complete basics brand grounded in comfort, sensory-considerate design and genuine inclusion.
Thank you to Underlines Magazine for sharing Andrew’s story and giving us the opportunity to explain why Being Wear exists.
