Modal vs Cotton Underwear: What's the Difference?
Cotton has been the default underwear fabric for decades, so it's worth asking why brands like Being Wear choose modal instead. The short answer: modal does almost everything cotton does, and does several things better, particularly when it comes to comfort and sensory feel.
What is modal?
Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric made from the pulp of sustainably grown beech trees. It's spun into a fibre that's soft, breathable and stretchy, then woven or knitted into fabric the same way cotton is. It's biodegradable, and producing it uses around 10 times less water than growing the same amount of cotton.
Modal vs cotton: the key differences
- Softness. Modal has a naturally smoother fibre than cotton, so it feels softer against the skin straight out of the pack, and tends to stay that way, rather than growing coarser after repeated washing.
- Breathability and moisture. Modal is highly breathable and moisture-wicking, helping to keep you dry and comfortable rather than damp, which matters over a full day of wear.
- Stretch and shape. Modal has more natural give than cotton, so it moves with your body instead of pulling or bagging out of shape over time.
- Sensory feel. Because it's smoother and less prone to holding onto a "rough" texture, modal is a common choice in sensory-friendly clothing, alongside flat seams and tagless construction.
- Sustainability. Beech trees used for modal require far less water and land than cotton farming, and modal is biodegradable at the end of its life.
Where cotton still holds up
Cotton isn't a bad fabric, it's breathable, widely available and familiar. But on softness, moisture management and sensory comfort specifically, modal is generally the better-performing choice, which is why it's the fabric behind Being Wear's entire range rather than a premium add-on.
What this means for your underwear drawer
Every piece we make, from briefs and boxers to binders, uses the same soft modal fabric, paired with flat seams and no-dig waistbands, so the fabric feel is consistent across your whole wardrobe, not just one "special" pair.
